Global Perspective: Finding Gratitude in Life’s Context

First, I must state a caveat. Gratitude is regularly weaponized by the greedy and powerful. Many will tell you to be grateful while stealing from you. Gratitude is best defined by and for you.

Second, environment matters. It is nearly impossible to cultivate gratitude surrounded by ungrateful people. The system of rewards will not be in place to do the work. So, associate with the grateful.

Third, relax. One must adopt a global perspective to establish gratitude. If one is panicked, the capacity to place one’s life in context is impaired. Step back and see how you fit into a bigger scheme.

Fourth, ask yourself about that scheme and your place in it. While you might desire things, are you among those in the most dire conditions? Read the news. See how some must live and die. Meditate on it.

Fifth, look at what you do have. When you experience pleasure in your daily life, be thankful for it. Whether it be a cup of coffee, the purring of a cat, or the passing of clouds in the sky, all are worthy of your attention and respect.

Sixth, don’t be rigid in this work. Some days don’t lend themselves to it. Accept that. Don’t be greedy to be grateful.

Finally, know that your example helps create a more grateful world. We learn much from watching others. As you grow in gratitude, you encourage others to follow.
